Erste Tage auf der Nordinsel

Der Norden ist echt dicht bevölkert. Neuseelands Hauptstadt, Wellington, ist unser erstes Ziel, da dort die Fähre hält. Es ist wahnsinnig windig und auf dem Weg zu unserem Campingplatz ein Stück nördlich der Stadt passiert das unfassbare: STAU! Wir brauchen 2 Stunden für eine 45 Minuten Strecke! Es gibt nichts, was so schlechte Laune in mir hervorruft wie Stau, was wohl mit ein Grund dafür ist, dass ich in Deutschland lieber auf die Bahn warte als mich dem Risikos eines Staus auszusetzen...
Unser erstes Großereignis ist ein paar Tage später das Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Eine Tageswanderung entlang des Schicksalsbergs aus Herr der Ringe, die zu den schönsten Wanderungen zählt, die man an einem Tag machen kann. Da es sich um einen Vulkan handelt, ist die Landschaft schwarz und unwirklich. Hinzu kommt, dass es oben auf dem Berg aus diversen Löchern brodelt und heiße Luft aufsteigt. Es riecht auch an der ein oder anderen Stelle schwefelig und die Krater Seen, die auf den Weg liegen, sind auch nicht als Trinkwasser geeignet.

The north island has so many inhabitants compared to the South Island. New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, is our first stop as we arrive by ferry on Wellington’s terminal. It s very windy and on our way the unthinkable happens: traffic jam! A real one! It takes us 2 hours for a 45 Minute drive. There is nothing I loath quotes as much as traffic jam. This must be the reason I rather wait for the train than take a car and risk the traffic jam in Germany...
Our first big event in the north is the Tongariro alpine crossing. It’s a day hike (or tramp, as the people here in New Zealand say), along the mount doom from the lord of the rings Movies. It is one of the most beautiful tracks which are only one day tracks. As it is Vulcano most of the landscape is black and feels a bit unreal. And the Earth is breathing warm steam along the topmost part of the track which smells quite a bit sulfuric. Those lakes along the way where not filled with drinkable water either...
