First full day was dedicated to sight seeing. We went to Hong Kong Island and walked around, went to see the breath taking view from the peak wandered around some more, just to enjoy the busy city. Old meets new, concrete jungle meets real jungle. East and west intertwine. Hot humid weather and a perfect sky gave us just the right holiday feeling. 

Der erste ganze Tag in Hong Kong war für eine ausführliche Stadtbesichtigung reserviert. Wir sind mit der Fähre vom Festland auf die Insel Hong Kong gefahren und haben uns umgesehen. Ein langer Stadtbummel führte schließlich zum "Peak", einem Aussichtspunkt auf einem der vielen Hügel. Traumhaft. Anschließend ging es weiter durch die Stadt, an Altem und Neuem vorbei an Beton und durch grünen Wald. Ost und West so vermischt wie sonst nirgends. Das heiß-schwüle Wetter und der perfekte Himmel haben dem Tag das Urlaubsfeeling gegeben.

Hong Kong City

I went to Hong Kong for a week, for vacation. It has been on my list for a long time now and finally the opportunity came. I was there half a day and already considering never going back home. I am in love. 

Ich war für eine Woche in Hong Kong. Ein kleiner Urlaub zwischendurch schadet ja nicht und Hong Kong ist schon seit Ewigkeiten auf meiner "must see" Liste. Ich war gerade einen halben Tag da und schon am überlegen, ob ich überhaupt zurück fliegen sollte oder einfach für immer dort bleibe. Verliebt.

First meal: Dim Sum. I wish there was dim sum in Stuttgart, I liked it a lot. The fried one was great and crisp. The Soft fluffy buns in the back were filled with bbq pork. Those were my favorite. The meatballs in the back of the picture were a bit glibbery. The one in the front was some kind of pork dim sum as well.
Erstes Essen: Dim Sum. Ich wünschte es gäbe ein Dim Sum Restaurant in Stuttgart. Einfach super lecker, und so viel verschiedenes, genau mein Ding. Das frittierte war lecker und knackig. Die Teigbällchen waren mit BBQ Füllung und das absolut beste! Die Hackbällchen hinten links im Bild waren ein bisschen glibberig. Und das vorne links ist auch eine Art Schweinefleisch, war ganz lecker, vor allem mit der Zimt-Dip-Sojasoße.

 I liked how you can walk above the streets./ Diese Erfindung, einfach ein Stockwerk über den Straßen zu laufen. Genial. 

The first half day was really already an amazing one. Such an amazing city. Even after journeying from Germany to Hong Kong I wasn't tired enough to go to bed before 12 in the evening. Actually we wanted to watch a soccer match from the world cup, but that was really too late and to complicated (you had to consume 24€ worth drinks to be allowed to watch the game at the bar, I don't think my liver would have liked that, and we didn't want to be all hung over the next day).
Der erste halbe Tag nach der langen Reise hin war der Wahnsinn. So viele Eindrücke und eine so tolle Stadt. Selbst nach so vielen Flugstunden war ich nicht müde genug um einfach ins Bett zu fallen, die Stadt war einfach zu verlockend. Eigentlich wollten wir noch das WM-Fußballspiel anschauen, aber das wurde dann doch etwas zu spät und kompliziert (24€ Mindestverzehr um die Leinwand mit zu nutzen wäre nicht gut für die Leber gewesen, ausserdem wollten wir ja am nächsten Tag nicht zu spät raus).

Magazines I Found and Liked II

There can never be enough information about cities. What they look like, how they smell, how they make you feel, how they form your behavior, your life, your everyday ways, your priorities, your free time, your way of thinking. Living in a city can mean everything to a person and a personality. My life would be completely different living in a city bad public transport. Or in an unwalkable city. In a city with less security, in a gated community, in a city with a larger population. I think about cities every day. What's good, what's bad, what could be better, what should be better. How. Why. 

Magazines about cities are great! The internet is great to, though... You can spend days and still not even know all the basic topics that are discussed right now. 

Stadtaspekte also updates you on their homepage and via facebook on topics of all kind concerning cities. It's in German. But if you click on Stadt um zehn you can also find english articles. 

 A reason to buy instead of just browse the net is the texture of the paper. The layout, the fonts. The feeling of holding this in your hands. 

I admit I am a paper-addict. I stoped printing my lecture material in university because I am a tree saver. I read online newspapers. I read i pad magazines. But these un-glossy, thick pages that were designed with so much love, pictures in good quality. It's the feeling, the content. Magazines. Whenever I feel un-inspired and in need of some comfort I turn to the shelf with all the amazing magazines and books full of assorted content. Carefully adjusted. 

Tomorrow I will go and check if I can get the second edition of Stadtaspekte in the main stations magazine store. It's out since the 26th.  

Next time I will try to make a nicer layout for the blog by writing my post in indesign. Maybe. We will see how this turns out of course.
