Leicht gepackt

Das Jahr neigt sich dem Ende und wir sind am Packen. Ich wollte eigentlich nur die kleine Reisetasche mitnehmen, jetzt stellt sich nur leider heraus, dass der Schlafsack deutlich größer ist als erwartet... gut, dass ich nicht groß bin und meine Kleidung nicht so viel Platz einnimmt. Ich bin gespannt, wie es uns ergehen wird. 

Am 2. Januar sitzen wir im Flugzeug nach Singapur! Endlich! 

The year is almost over and we are packing for the journey. I didn't want to take too many things and only have a small bag, but my new sleeping bag turns out to be a bit larger than expected. So we'll see how I manage with my clothes, good thing I'm small and they don't take to much space. 

On the 2nd of January we're off to Singapore, finally! 

Travel Season First Stop: Italy

My exams are almost over (on September 17th) and after those 3 month of paper writing and exams I am glad I can finally focus on the important things in life: travel
My travel plans have developed over the last months and I am pleased with the outcome. It's a rather unexpected development, but I am just the more excited about it. Every month a new destination, culinary adventures, to the end of the world and back. Sounds like a plan. 

Die Prüfungen sind bald vorbei. Nach knapp 3 Monaten voller Abgaben und Prüfungen ist das Ende in Sicht (17. September) und ich kann mich wieder meinem Privatvergnügen widmen: Reisen
Die Reisepläne, die sich über die letzten Wochen entwickelt haben, gefallen mir ganz gut. Jeden Monat was anderes sehen, Tapetenwechsel, Kulinarische Weiterbildung, und einmal bis ans Ende der Welt. Klingt nach einem guten Plan.

A good opportunity to test my new camera and get used to it. And of course enjoy life in Bella Italia.
Eine gute Gelegenheit meine neue Kamera zu testen und das Leben in Bella Italia zu genießen.  

We will travel by train. As we did it this way in Korea and Japan and it worked out really well. I thought Japan was an expensive place to travel to, but now that we booked out hotels in Italy, I think I will re-think my opinion in this matter. A good reason to travel to Japan again. And Korea, and China and so many more. But this has to wait until 2014. Good thing the world is so big, there are still lots of places to see and explore. Always a good excuse to go out and travel.   
Reisen werden wir mit dem Zug, das haben wir ja in Korea und Japan schon geübt und es hat ganz gut geklappt. Ich dachte ja, Japan wäre teuer gewesen, aber nachdem wir alle Hotels in Italien gebucht haben, bin ich mir nicht mehr sicher... Ein guter Grund, noch einmal nach Japan zu reisen! Und Korea, und nach China, und und und. Aber damit warte ich bis 2014. Ich bin froh, dass die Welt so groß ist.  So gibt es immer einen Grund los zu ziehen und zu reisen. 

Weekend Getaway

The weather is amazing right now! So we decided to visit a friend at her home at a lake called Bodensee, english: Lake Konstanz, over the weekend.
It's about 200km to the south and considered the only outskirt of Stuttgart that's not accessible by metro.  Of course it is not an outskirt of Stuttgart, but as about half of Stuttgarts population comes here over the weekend, and many other people from the region as well, so you can tease the locals by saying so. It's beautiful and feels so much like being on a vacation! I am still considering becoming a writer and traveling between Venice and here... 
Das Wetter ist einfach perfekt! Deshalb haben wir uns entschieden eine Freundin am Bodensee zu besuchen. So übers Wochenende. 
Da der Bodensee nur ca. 200km von Stuttgart entfernt ist, wird er netter Weise als "der einzige Vorort Stuttgarts, der keinen S-Bahn-Anschluss hat" bezeichnet. Habe ich diese Wochenende gelernt. Hauptsächlich liegt das daran, das halb Stuttgart am Wochenende runter gebraust kommt um sich zu sonnen und den See zu genießen. Es ist wirklich wunderschön und absolutes Urlaubsflair! Vielleicht doch Schriftsteller werden und zwischen dem Bodensee und Venedig und der Nordsee pendeln? 
We went to the lake, rented some bikes and had a full day of biking and relaxing by the lake. I think I ate about twice as much as usually. The food was just too delicious. 
Wir haben uns am See Fahrräder ausgeliehen und eine Radtour gemacht, relaxed am See gelegen, gebadet, mit Algen um uns geschmissen. Ich glaube ich habe ca. doppelt so viel gegessen wie sonst. Das Essen war einfach zu gut!

Nach einem so langen Tag in der Sonne war das beste Eis der Stadt einfach Pflicht! 

In the evening we went to the annual wine-festival. Pretty crowded, good wine, more food. 

Am Abend war Weinfest. Ziemlich voll und sehr spaßig, mit leckerem Wein aus der Region und sehr sehr viel Essen!

Das Wetter über dem See ändert sich unglaublich schnell. Wir waren gerade am Frühstücken, also ein Sturm losbrach den man 10 Minuten vorher erst hat kommen sehen. 

I wish I didn't have exams so soon, otherwise we could have stayed longer... 
My next weekend trip is already planed. Trying to balance studying and fun for the first time, and it kinda works. I was so productive in the afternoon after we came home! Impressive. 
Ich wünschte ich hätte keine Prüfungen mehr, dann hätten wir länger bleiben können... Der nächste Trip ist geplant, ich versuche unglaublicher Weise zum ersten mal mein Sozialleben nicht in der Prüfungszeit komplett verkümmern zu lassen. Ich bin fast stolz auf mich, aber mal sehen was dann die Ergebnisse bringen... 

On top of the World

Picture Overload!

We went hiking in Austria last weekend. What a view! (Wish I could make the pictures larger but Blogger wont let me...) And so relaxing to not think about the work loads we left behind. There really was no time thinking about it, as we all had to concentrate on what's ahead of us. Exhausting but so worth it.

 Made it. It's not the top though, but the rest was snowy and unsafe, so most of us didn't feel like breaking bones today and eventually nobody made it up all the way.

 Panorama view. Everybody was wearing light shirts but little Sarah is scared of sunburn, so I decided to get cooked in my jacket. Wasn't that bad, actually.

Faces in Brussels

Ende November ging es mit dem Orchester der Universität Stuttgart für ein langes Wochenende nach Belgien. Leuven, um genau zu sein. 3 Tage, 3 Städte. Leuven, Brüssel und Luxemburg haben wir uns angesehen, zwei Konzerte gespielt und jede Menge Gutes gegessen.

Die Fotos von den anderen habe ich noch nicht, deswegen gibt es nur meine zu sehen. Leuven ist sehr süß und sehr studentisch, mit vielen Kneipen und viel belgischem Bier. Und Pommes! 

End of November I went to Belgium over the weekend, together with the orchestra of my home town University of Stuttgart. We went to Leuven. 3 days, 3 cities. Leuven, Brussels and Luxembourg. Had two concerts as well and tons of good food. Sadly right now I only have my own pictures, and I didn't take that many... Leuven is very cute and made for students. Lots of bars, belgian beer and french fries (which are originally from belgium, but since they are from the french-speaking part nobody knew)!

Brüssel ist sehr schön. Wie gerne würde ich mal nach Belgien oder Holland ziehen, für ein, zwei Jahre, nur um einfach mal diese tolle Atmosphäre genießen zu können und ganz relaxed zu sein wie die Holländer alle. 

Brussels is very beautiful. I would love to move to Belgium or the Netherlands just for one or two years. The atmosphere here is so different, relaxed. I want to be relaxed like all the Dutch. Love them.

Travel Diary Budapest

Älter werden ist ja bekanntlich nicht schön. Um nicht daran zu denken, musste eine Ablenkung her. Tapetenwechsel ?! -Ja bitte! Wir haben uns auf Budapest geeinigt und ich muss sagen, es war die beste Entscheidung! Budapest ist klasse. Nicht zu teuer, ein bisschen runtergekommen, mit viel Charme, und nicht so spießig wie Wien. Von Donnerstag Abend bis Montag Abend waren wir dort und haben uns die Stadt angesehen, das Nachtleben getestet und Kulturprogramm gemacht.

We all know, getting older ain't fun. So I wanted to be distracted . So to escape getting older there is nothing better than getting out of town. Our little group decided on Budapest. Best decision ever! I love the city, it's a bit run down but very charming and not as cocky as Vienna. We went from thursday evening till monday evening and explored the city, the nightlife and did some culture-stuff.

Unser Guide durch die Stadt. Super gemacht. Steffen hatte schon Erfahrungen mit der free City Tours in anderen Städten und hat uns für den ersten Tag eine rausgesucht. Werd ich bei meinen nächsten Urlaubszielen jetzt auch immer nachsehen ob es angeboten wird.

Our city guide. She did it soo well. Steffen had "free walking tours" in other cities before, so we decided on this as our first event in Budapest. Next time I travel to a city I'll look for a walking tour there too. It's good for first orientation and you see a lot in only a couple of hours.

BEST THING EVER: Ein Schwimmbad/Sauna mit Aussen und Innenbereich. In diesem wunderbaren alten Gebäude! Ein bisschen Prunk macht so viel aus, wer will schon ins Vaihinger Hallenbad, wenn er auch in die Therme in Budapest kann?! Und warum baut heute keiner mehr in diesem Stil? Unverständnis meinerseits.

BEST THING EVER: A pool/sauna outside and inside in this building! A bit of pomp adds a lot to the vibe. Who wants to go to a lame indoor pool in Germany when you can go the thermal spring in Budapest?! And why does nobody built houses in this kind of style?No understanding at all.

WoHooooo, mein Geburtstag war klasse. Reinfeiern, rausfeiern, 4 Tage nur tolle Sachen machen. / Wohoo, my birthday was so cool. Celebrating from 12 at night till 12 the next night, 4 days of fun.

Die Bar, oder was auch immer genau es war, war der erste von sehr sehr vielen Orten, bei denen ich mir gewünscht hätte, es gebe ihn auch in Stuttgart. Groß, verwinkelt, sehr sehr liebevoll eingerichtet, gute Musik, gute Stimmung, angenehme Preise. Glühwein! Der Raucherbereich im Innenhof war gepflastert mit gefühlt tausend verschiedenen Sitzgelegenheiten, sogar ein Boot gebaut aus alten Ski war dabei. Innen die verschiedensten Stühle und Tische. Und es war so wunderbar durchmischt, vom 15-jährigen pseudo Punk bis zum 50-jährigen Cowboy mit passenden Stiefeln und Hut. Sitzen, Wein trinken, Leute gucken.

This bar, or whatever you would call it, was the first of very many places we visited on our trip which I wish we had in Stuttgart. Big, labyrinthine, lovely interior, good music, good vibe, good prices. Hot Wine (a german christmas market thing)! The courtyard made into an amazing smokers area with a million different seating opportunities and even a boat made out of old ski to sit in. Inside there were tons of chairs and sofas around different styles of tables. Very vintage. And the people there, fifteen years old wanna-be punks, fifty years old cowboys with boots and hats, everything, mixed together. Siting, drinking wine, watching people. 

Mein eigentlicher Geburtstag war wohl wettermäßig der schlechteste Tag... Schön wars trotzdem. / On my actual birthday the weather was the worst in all four days. Still a nice day.

Jemand möge die beiden Jungs an der Scheibe mal in Stuttgart an der Uni vorbei schicken... / Somebody please send these two over to the University of Stuttgart!  

SO LECKER! Ein super Restaurant! Klein, mit nur 3 Hauptgerichten oder so... Die Atmosphäre war toll, die Einrichtung, der Wein. Und selbst die armen Studenten konnten sich ihr Essen leisten ;-)

SO DELICIOUS! An amazing restaurant. Small, only three different main dishes, but the atmosphere was amazing, and the interior, and the wine. Best part: even as students prices you can handle ;-) 

Der "Schuppen" war der Hammer. Ein verlassenes Haus, von aussen total unscheinbar, fast unsichtbar. Man geht zur Tür hinein und plötzlich eröffnen sich WELTEN. 3 Stockwerke, überall Zimmer, verschiedenste Musik, ein riesiger chill-out Bereich, Essen, verrückte Dekoration. Die Leute kommen aus überall her. (Nur brandschutzmäßig war es unterirdisch... keine ausgewiesenen Fluchtwege, Überfüllung, massenhaft Brandlast,... ich führe es lieber nicht weiter aus! Aber das wird wohl auch der Grund sein, warum es sowas in Deutschland niemals geben wird...)

This place is just awesome! It's been an empty apartment house and from the outside it looks totally unimpressive, almost invisible. You go through the door and all of the sudden whole worlds seem to appear where there seemed to be nothing. Three floors full of rooms, different styles of music, a huge chill out area, food, crazy decoration. The people there come from everywhere all over the world. (My only concern about this place was the fire safety... no emergency exit signs, overcrowded, tons of fire load.... and so on. In Germany such a place would never exist, way to dangerous...)

Die zweitgrößte Synagoge der Welt. Ich war bisher noch nie in einer. Die Führung (die man mit kaufen musste, ohne konnte man nicht rein) war interessant und dieses Bauwerk einfach super beeindruckend!

This is the second largest synagoge in the world. I have never been to one before. We had to buy tickets to a tour otherwise you are not allowed inside but it was super interesting and the buildng itself is really impressive!

Das Opernhaus ist wunderschön. Einfach ein perfekter letzter Abend.
The opera house is absolutely amazing. It was just such a perfect last evening.

Am Montag, unserem letzten Tag, ging es in die Markthalle. Super cool, definitive Besichtigungsempfehlung. Im ersten Geschoss war so Touristenkram, im EG essen essen essen und Paprikapulver, und im UG Fleisch, Fish und eingelegtes Gemüse.

On monday, our last day, we went to the big market. I definitely recommend it! Upstairs tourist-stuff, ground floor FOOD and peper-powder, down stairs meat, fish & pickled veggies. 

Wer behauptet Gemüse hätte keine Gefühle?! Und Spaß scheinen sie im Glas auch zu haben. / Who said veggies don't have feelings?! They seem to have tons of fun in those jaws.
