Road Trip Bulgaria

I went around the country for a week, to shoot the buildings I need for my master thesis and do some measuring work. Made a little photo-diary out of it.

I wanted to take a swim, but had to finish my work. And the next day was all rainy and gray. Thats what they call bad luck. / Ich wollte eigentlich eine Runde ins Wasser, musste aber meine Arbeit erst beenden und am nächsten Tag hat es geregnet. Pech.

Days in Sofia

I went to Bulgaria for a little research. Writing a master-thesis about traditional Bulgarian residential buildings is a bit trickier than I thought so I had to come and get the information.The internet was not much of use for this topic...

It was rainy in Sofia while I was there, making my way through the city with various transportation options. 

Ich bin nach Bulgarien gereist um ein bisschen Recherche zu betreiben. Meine Masterarbeit über traditionelles Bauen in Bulgarien lässt sich nicht mit google schreiben, und so habe ich eine vor Ort Recherche geplant, um meine Informationen zusammen zu sammeln. 

Es war regnerisch als ich in Sofia gelandet bin. es war trotzdem schön, die Stadt mit ihren unterschiedlichen Fortbewegungsmittel zu erkunden. 

Found this super cute coffee shop, which makes good coffee. At night it seems to be a bar. / Dieses kleine Cafè habe ich auf meinen Streifzügen entdeckt. Sie machen sehr guten Kaffee und scheinen am Abend eine Art Bar zu sein.

Next time I'll try the Supa-Star Soups. Really hipster with vegan options and gluten free and such. / Nächstes Mal werde ich die Supa-Star Suppen probieren. Ziemlich hipster, mit veganen Suppen und glutenfreien Möglichkeiten und so. 

Sofia is a bit of a mess, but I really enjoy the buzz of the city and there is a lot beauty in-between the chaos. / Sofia ist ein ziemliches Durcheinander, aber mir gefällt dieses belebte Gewusel in der Stadt. Und es gibt so viele hübsche Kleinigkeiten zwischen dem Chaos versteckt.

Sadly there were clouds blocking my mountain view. / Leider haben die Wolken immer die Berge verhangen.

Traveling to Bulgaria

My grandparents live in Bulgaria. It's a small country in Europe with a very difficult history. 

Meine Großeltern wohnen in Bulgarien. Ein kleines Land in Europa, mit einer schwierigen Geschichte.

Since I went there for fun and family visits, dad and I decided to check out one of the communist sites left from the 1980's. "Not to long ago", one would think, but it felt like it must have been a hundred years ago since last in use. It's falling apart and nobody looks after it. Sad story about how we deal with our history. It looks amazing, I wish they would look after it!

Da ich keine Verpflichtungen hatte und nur aus Spaß und um meine Familie zu besuchen hingeflogen bin, haben mein Papa und ich einen Ausflug zu einem kommunistischen Denkmal gemacht. Es wurde in den 1980'er Jahren erbaut und ist in einem extrem verwahrlosten Zustand. Schade, wie wir mit der Geschichte umgehen. Dabei sieht es so beeindruckend aus!

In Love With Naples

Naples is definitely my favorite city in Italy so far. It's so alive with people who actually live there. Unlike Rome or Florence, where you are just confronted with street vendors and a sea of tourists.

Our hostel in Naples was lovely as well! On top of a hill with such an amazing view! Down the hill is a market where you can buy all the fresh fruit and all kind of other things, like cell phone chargers and sunglasses... I fell in love with a bakery! They have the most amazing croissants filled with chocolate and jam, super soft and juicy tea-cake, and just everything breakfast could possibly be. And the sizes were so absolutely perfect! In Stuttgart the sweet pastries have the size of my face and after two bites you are already planning on how to get rid of it... Find some friends to share, stuff it in your bag to find it 4 hours later, completely soaked through the paper bag... first world problems.

Neapel ist definitiv meine Lieblingsstadt in Italien, bis jetzt. Sie ist so lebendig und voller Menschen, die tatsächlich dort leben, ganz anders als in Rom oder Florenz, wo nur Touristen waren, weit uns breit. Und unser Hostel war ein ziemlicher Hit. Ziemlich weit oben am Berg, mit perfekter Aussicht! Direkt unterhalb ist ein Markt, an dem jeden Tag unglaublich viel los ist. Ich habe mich direkt in eine Bäckerei dort verliebt. Alles war so unendlich lecker, die Croissants mit Schoko oder Marmelade, die super-saftigen Rosinenbrötchen, das ganze Frühstückssortiment! In guter Portionsgröße! In Stuttgart haben die Bäcker immer diese fürchterlich riesigen süßen Teile in der Vitrine liegen... wenn ich mich hinter der Mohnschnecke verstecken kann, dann ist das irgendwie so unansprechend...

We were 4 days in Naples but one was spend on a trip to Capri and one on the Amalfi-coast. There is not much to see in Naples, but so much to live, to eat, to relax and savor. Hang out in a park, sit by the sea, enjoy some coffee at a cafe, roam the streets. Such a charming city!

Wir waren 4 Tage in Neapel, davon aber einen auf Capri und einen an der Amalfiküste. Zu sehen gibt es nicht viel, aber zu Essen, und zu genießen. Im Park liegen, am Meer sitzen, im Cafe sitzen, rumschlendern. Eine schöne Stadt.

Rome sweet Rome

When in Rome, visiting ancient roman sites seems to be a must! The colosseum is sure interesting and super high tech. They used to flood the arena and have sea battles in there... and of famous gladiators were fighting in there as well...

In Rom bietet sich Sightseeing ja wirklich an. Es ging direkt los mit dem Kolosseum, ein Meisterwerk der Architektur/Ingenieurs-kunst! Anfangs haben sie die Arena zum Spaß geflutet und Schiffskriege als Theaterstücke vorgeführt.... Später wurde umgebaut und die Gladiatoren kamen ins Spiel... und da sag noch einer "die spinnen, die Römer"

Rome is somewhat crowded. All the interesting sights are flooded with people. Many Americans...

Rom ist ziemlich voll. Alles was halbwegs interessant aussieht ist voll mit Menschen. Viele Amerikaner...

Good food, a MUST. Saltimbocca ala Romana! Melting in my mouth! Alex set a goal to have one pizza a day.

Gut Essen war natürlich Pflicht. Saltimbocca ala Romana! In ordentlich Fettsoße. Aber es war einfach soooo lecker! Alex hat sein Ziel, jeden Tag eine Pizza zu essen, erreicht. War aber auch immer lecker.

We had a tour through the vatican and went into the St. Peter's Basilika afterwards. It's sure worth the visit. You can spend a whole day in there, but only if your feet will carry you all day...

Wir haben eine Tour durch den Vatican gemacht und anschließend den Petersdom besucht. Sehr beeindruckend, aber man braucht wirklich Ausdauer um durch zu halten...

Nothing beats a slice of watermelon by the water. Happy girl.

You can see the Basilika in the back! So beautiful! And the best is, it is still warm outside. Italian weather, I like you a lot!

Man kan sogar den Dom von hier aus sehen! Und es war so wunderbar warm! Italienisches Wetter ist einfach eine Nummer besser...

 Night life.

Still thinking about becoming a writer and moving south to enjoy life.

Ich bin noch am überlegen, ob ich nicht doch Schriftsteller werden sollte. Der Gedanke, das Leben so genießen zu können ist sehr verlockend!

Firenze in two days

We took a flight to Florence/Firenze. The first day way cloudy but the city is still impressive. The amount of people there is just something! 

Der Urlaub hat begonnen und wir sind in Florenz gelandet. Der erste Tag war zwar etwas wolkenverhangen, was die Stadt nicht weniger beeindruckend gemacht hat. Diese Menschenmassen! 

Food in Firenze is expensive but OH SO GOOD! The best ice cream, Panini with fresh mozzarella and prosciutto, Pizza, Pizza every day! I don't regret a thing!

Das Essen in Florenz ist nicht gerade günstig, aber SOOOO LECKER! Das beste Eis, Paninis mit Büffelmozzarella und Prosciutto, Pizza, jeden Tag Pizza. Ich bereue nix!

Ein Eis am Tag macht glücklich, habe ich mir sagen lassen: "You can't buy happiness, but you can buy gelato!" 

Ponte Vecchio on the first day. First I was not impressed at all, but you fall in love easily with this unique bridge. 

Ponte Vecchio am ersten Tag. Anfangs war ich unbeeindruckt, aber man verliebt sich schnell.

This is the bridge. They sell expensive jewelry everywhere and it's hard to tell you are actually on a bridge.

Auf der Brücke selbst ist ein ziemliches Gewusel. Teure Schmuckläden überall.

The view over Firenze. I almost bought an umbrella that looked like the dome, but I got distracted with looking for the perfect leather bag, didn't find one though... Not enough time for looking.

Ausblick auf Florenz. Ich war kurz davor mir einen Regenschirm mit Domkuppel-Motiv zu kaufen, aber kam dann irgendwie nicht mehr dazu vor lauter suchen nach der schönsten Tasche, die ich dann auch nicht gefunden habe...

Next Day.

The best Paninis in Firenze! Not expensive but sooo so good. Ham, cheese, a glas of wine for lunch. And the owner is so charming!

Der beste Panini-Laden in Florenz! Für wenig Geld den frischesten Schinken und wunderbaren Käse und ein Gläschen Wein am Mittag sorgen für allerbeste Laune. Und die Verkäufer waren so charmant.

We went to see the Uffizien, the most important art collection on Firenze. Collected by the Medici-family. We were not allowed to take pictures inside, but on the terrace the view is beautiful.

Der obligatorische Abstecher in den Uffizien. DIE Kunstsammlung in Florenz. Drinnen durfte man keine Fotos machen, aber der Ausblick von der Terrasse war ein Foto wert.

Ponte Vecchio again. Definitively the highlight of the city (beside the food). It's just so beautiful, day and night. You can sit there, enjoy some ice cream and watch the scene.

Ponte Vecchio ist definitiv eins der Highlights der Stadt. So schön. Bei Tag, bei Nacht, und gegenüber auf der Brücke kann man super sitzen, Eis essen und den Ausblick genießen.

i didn't want to leave Firenze. The food was just so good, and the ice cream! And it is just the perfect walkable city, because it is so small in the center and all the nice things are close together.

Ich konnte mich kaum von Florenz trennen. Das Essen war so gut, und das Eis! Und es war schön klein, die perfekte "Lauf-Stadt". Zumindest der Teil in dem wir waren...
